The Global Game Jam 2015 is coming up next weekend, and I plan to attend in Tempe, AZ. I’ve spent some time diving deeply into JS, Redis, and Python (as well as Python for customer work) to be ready for the Jam. I’ve been working primarily with what is known as architecture.
Simple coding for a non-technical user
Most of the customers I do work for are very technical. They have their own IT departments, often millions or tens of millions of dollars of equipment, and trained operators.
There are times I work for one person who isn’t all that technical but has an automation need. I did a project for one such person earlier this week.
A great new year’s eve with a dousing of snow!
I spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Tempe, AZ working with David on establishing a JavaScript toolchain. More on that in a later post. Driving back New Years Eve, though, I got caught in the snow in Arizona! Continue reading
Metaprogramming
I periodically get calls from firms trying to place me into one of their various pre-determined slots. I know they want to hear “C++ Programmer” or “Java programmer.” But aside from those terms being silly they’re not actually reflective of what I do anyway. I do something a lot more specialized.
Are There Not Enough Developers?
I’ve been getting calls from major placement firms the last two weeks which surprises me since the dead zone between Thanksgiving and Christmas is normally quiet until New Years. Obviously Dice has thousands of unfilled positions but often those are reposts of the same position to make them “current.” What’s going on? Continue reading
Another Holy-day Weekend, Another Nuisance Failure
Right before Labor Day weekend 2012 I had my condo’s AC fail, car’s AC fail, XBox die, and I believe one of my monitors die. That year, every holiday weekend had a major failure, and my salvation came when I received an unsolicited call to go to New York City for a year working at Bloomberg (the company, not the Mayor) — which I did, great year, great people!
In short, I fled, leaving all my troubles behind me.
Memorial day weekend this year, my mouth exploded aborting my Mississippi River trip and leaving me unable to get to the dentist until the long weekend was over (at least it was a nomadic failing).
Today, a day before the holiday weekend, my condo’s AC failed again.
Overqualified huh?
I shouldn’t find it amusing, but I do. I was talking to a prospect about working on a project that would have let me work remotely from my Las Vegas office. Alas, the prospect spoke with me, asked me about my work experience, and told me I was over-qualified and I’d be bored doing the work needed so the interview was over.
Of course, they could simply have hated me. I’d have expected the more general “You don’t sound like a good fit” then. It’s even possible they thought I was lying and didn’t want to be confrontational and say “I don’t believe you did what you said.”
Preparation in Bemidji
I landed at BJI airport (Bemidji, MN) Sunday the 18th of May (Mt. St. Helens eruption day for those who remember the 1980s).
Back in LV with river trip suspended
It’s been over a week … so what happened?
Last Friday, May 23, bone was poking through my gums into my tongue … again. I had dental surgery again Tuesday the 27th.
I’ll post the first days of my trip before my body failed me with pictures in following posts but this is to let everyone know that I’m back in Las Vegas and not on the river at this time.
I’ve heard the saying “Your mouth made promises your body can’t keep” but I’m suffering from “The body is willing but the mouth is weak.”
The more interesting posts will follow. There are probably none more disappointed than me that my attempt ended so soon.
Keep the Light!
Cleared for launch!
I’m back from the follow-up with my dentist and the wound has healed nicely.
Tomorrow, I’m winging my way with a five hour flight to Bemedji, MN from Las Vegas.
Keep the Light!
